Below is a conversation between me (Makiko) and my father (netsuke artist Ryushi):
Makiko: “I’m thinking of making a simple netsuke, and rub it every day for a year or so, and see if there would be any wear.”
Ryushi: “I, too, thought about that long ago and made a netsuke, but when it was complete, I wanted some money and sold it (before rubbing).”
Makiko: “Oh, really!? (He surely is a pro…).”
