In 1981 when learning to be a potter in Japan, Edmund de Waal saw a collection of ivory and wooden netsuke in his great uncle’s apartment in Tokyo.
In this illustrated lecture he recounts the story of that collection and how this unexpected inheritance led him to explore ideas of exile and migration in both his writing and his artistic practice.
